Academy Centre Review
Session Date: Monday 12th November 2018
Learning Block: Intelligent Defending
Session Focus: 1v1 Defending
We entered the second learning block of our programme last Monday as we delivered the first session of our 'Intelligent Defending' block with a session on '1v1 Defending'.
WHAT: Each group were introduced to the learning block as we prepare for an important 6 weeks of the programme. Intelligent Defending is so important for players of all ages as we deliver sessions with the common focus of 'Defend to Attack' - we want to make defending as attractive as possible within this period as players need to understand the importance of defending & how we can turn that defending into chances to score goals!
HOW: We used a variety of practices to show the importance of 1v1 defending & defending from different angles in different situations. The key messages of 1v1 defending was: -
The Press - How quick can you press the danger player? Can you put him under pressure before he attacks the available spaces?
The Body Shape - Can your body shape tempt the attacker into a danger area? Can you be 'side on' before going in for the tackle?
The Reaction - Can I be quick to react to knick the ball from the attacker?
The Strength - Can I be strong to block the attacker? Can I use my upper body & arms to fairly win the ball?
WHY: Players will experience defending a 1v1 multiple times in a game in different areas of the pitch, and this situation happens more than others in each game that your son/daughter will play, therefore it's crucial players understand the importance of defending a 1v1 as it leads to many chances created if players don't defend correctly.
Well done to our Players of the Week below who stood out within their groups.
Tonight is a tactical session of 'How quick can we press out of possession to stop attacks?'.
If your son/daughter is interested in experiencing our Academy Centre, we offer a free two-week trial for all new players. To receive a Welcome Pack, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
